Third Trimester: Weeks 28–40+

The final stretch! Weeks 28 through 40 (and beyond) bring rapid baby growth and increasing anticipation. Your baby is gaining weight, practicing breathing, and getting ready for life outside the womb. You're preparing for labor, delivery, and meeting your little one.

Common Symptoms

  • Shortness of breath as baby crowds your diaphragm
  • Braxton Hicks contractions
  • Pelvic pressure and frequent urination
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Swollen feet and ankles
  • Nesting instinct
  • Heartburn and indigestion

Key Tests and Screenings

  • Prenatal visits every 2 weeks, then weekly
  • Group B strep (GBS) test (weeks 36-37)
  • Cervical checks in later weeks
  • Non-stress tests if going past due date
  • Kick counting daily

  • Pack your hospital bag by week 36
  • Pre-register at your hospital or birth center
  • Learn the signs of labor: regular contractions, water breaking, bloody show
  • Rest whenever you can — you'll need the energy
  • Finalize your birth plan and discuss it with your provider
